Hi, I’m Arlene. Welcome to From Pennies to Plenty!

If you had to describe your personal finance goals, it would probably sound just like that. But, if someone asked you what’s keeping you from achieving that, you’d have a list of reasons. It’s because you don’t have a top-dollar job, you have too many bills to pay, or you don’t know where to start. I know, they don’t teach this stuff in high school!

Whatever the reason, I'm glad you're here now. That you’re here and reading this means you want to improve your life by taking the first steps or making bigger strides on your financial journey.

You might be sitting there discouraged thinking of all the ways things can or already have gone wrong. Maybe you’ve tried to manage your finances and failed. Maybe you’re in debt way over your head and aren’t sure anything can help you now. Or maybe you’re doing great with your millions of dollars. What more do you need? No matter where you are in your journey, you can make positive changes to improve your finances and overall life.

What’s my story?

Back in 2013, I moved back home to my native San Francisco after spending years away for work, school, and travel. I also brought home with me $30,000 in student loans and had no job lined up. I got a contract job working in the schools soon after I started my search and breathed a sigh of relief as I worked the next eight months straight. But then summer break came and I had no guarantee for summer work or a job for the next school year. I spent the entire summer worried over my uncertain future.

I managed that summer through careful budgeting and saving, but I worried more than I wanted to and later took a job that I didn’t really want because I needed one. Sound familiar?

One day I started selling old clothes from my closet and random things that I found around the house. I made extra money selling second-hand goods and absolutely loved it. I told all my friends and family and soon they started asking me to sell things for them too. I realized then that I could help others as much as I help myself.

What now?

Now I no longer worry as much as I did that first summer. For one thing, I’m free of student loans. Yay! I’ve since moved on to trying to reach other goals of the adult world. I’m sure you’re familiar with them: buy a house, care for a car, have a family, stock up for retirement, and don’t forget to save for a rainy day! Is it possible to do all this and still enjoy the occasional dinner out, a yearly vacation, and a trip to the theater?

Yes, it is! You can make big and small changes to your life to help you meet your financial and other goals. I know because my life has gotten better as I’ve gotten my life in order and begun living a more fulfilled life. That’s not to say that I’m a financial guru or have the secret to living a blissful, worry-free life. Far, far from it. But I’m learning to build a better life for myself.  I want the same for you too!

I started From Pennies to Plenty to help young adults (and the young at heart) take charge of their finances and in doing so, have the freedom to live the life they want. If this appeals to you, sign up for my email list. Earn more. Save more. Live more. Let’s do it together!
