The other day I found myself telling someone what I do in my free time. Most of my free time is spent working on my side hustles of reselling second-hand clothing and blogging. Once I shared this information and the work that goes into each, I heard, “how do you find the time for your side hustles?”
Since I started selling second-hand clothes and accessories online several years ago, I’ve been trying to improve my business. That means selling more in-demand items, sourcing items cheaper, and taking better pictures. One way to source better items has been to offer my selling services for consignment.
Most people probably wouldn’t complain about having a little more money in their pockets. The more difficult thing is how to make that happen. Now if you’re bringing in the big bucks at your primary job or have the potential to earn more there, then keep focusing on that job. But if you find that your current salary is not enough for you to meet your financial obligations and goals, then it’s time to consider what else is available to you.
Over the past several months, I’ve tried to grow my closet and expand my offerings with the intention of making more sales. I’ve been taking chances on brands that I previously didn’t sell, either because I didn’t think they would sell well or I didn’t know about them. Summer tends to bring a slowdown in sales for online sellers. While a sales slump can be a test of patience, it can also be a time to focus on improving other aspects of your business. That’s what I’m trying to do this summer and why I’ll be writing a series of posts on how to up your selling game over the summer months.
In April of this year, I hosted a Closet to Cash online listing challenge. My goal was to motivate myself and fellow sellers to list more items for sale over the seven days of the challenge. I had a growing pile of thrifted clothing taking over my lounge chair. I knew that if I could push myself to get them listed, I would see more sales and increased profits.
Another quarter of the year has passed, which means it’s time for me to share a thrift selling update, including what worked and what sold this winter. The past few months have been full of ups and downs for me on the thrifting front. On the downside, I haven’t spent as much time as I’ve wanted to focus on selling due to other life events. But that’s what’s great about selling! You can do it on your terms.
It’s confession time. When I sold my first few items online, I packaged them in Ziplock bags and recycled mailers before shipping them off. Stuffing would’ve been a better way to describe it. Forget about visual appeal. I only thought about keeping the items dry if the packages got wet.Thankfully, I’ve come a long way since then.
I’ve been focused on thrift shopping and selling with a one-track mind recently. Several weeks ago, I wrote about why you should sell on multiple platforms and gave some examples of things I sold. This week, I wanted to share some more of my recent thrifting activities as well as examples of my recent sales.
With December here, it’s time to celebrate this year’s progress and wins on the selling front. I can’t believe that another year has passed and I’m still here with a profitable side hustle. Welcome to September! As we head down the final stretch of 2017, I keep asking myself where the days have gone. It feels like just a few weeks ago that I posted my spring fashion finds.
