How to Model Clothes on Poshmark

A common question I hear from sellers is how they should photograph their clothes. Should they do a flat lay, use a body form, hang clothes, or model them?

Each of these methods has pros and cons, and sellers have their preferences. Today I want to talk specifically about how modeling your clothes can help you make sales and some tips to help you do it too.

You might be thinking that modeling clothes is not for you. I completely understand how you feel. I’ve thought of so many reasons over the years, both legitimate and not.

  • The clothes don’t fit me.

  • The clothes don’t look good on me.

  • I don’t have anything to match the clothes to make an outfit.

  • Bad hair day

  • Bad skin day

  • My house has bad lighting.

  • I don’t have a good backdrop.

  • I don’t know how to take pictures of myself.

  • I don’t want pictures of myself online.

  • I don’t want to stretch or wear out the clothes.

  • I don’t know how to pose.

  • It takes more time.

Guess what? There are ways around most of these. We’ll go over them.

The next thing to consider is if modeling your clothes will help you make more sales. Think about how your favorite retailers showcase clothes on their website. Most of the time the items are shown on a person.

I just browsed the Target and Banana Republic sites, and their clothes were mostly modeled. Real estate agents show staged homes so people can imagine living in them.

The same is true for clothes. People need to see it on someone to envision how it will look on them.

Not everyone will agree with me on this. I think that as long as the clothes look attractive in the modeled picture, it will help your chances of a sale.

Take a look at these Poshmark sellers for some modeling inspiration!

Paula Joanna

I was drawn to Paula’s Joanna’s closet and Instagram profile because of her bright photos and casually modeled clothes. I’ve found she has great sense of humor too, which helps with navigating this reselling business.

Paula Joanna makes modeling clothes look easy. Bad hair day, no matching shoes, no special background? No problem! Her photos show that you can feature just the clothes simply and beautifully.

Takeaways:

  • You don’t have to show your face. Take pictures of tops showing just your torso or dresses showing below the shoulders on down.

  • Try different poses. Turn sideways, stand off to the side, swing an arm.

  • Try sitting or standing.

  • Use a solid color background.

Fro Plus Fashion

Shamika makes it look fun and fashionable to wear her clothes. Put on that ruffle dress, and you’ll be running in style too!

I love that she skips the plain solid color background for more interesting scenes like parks and gardens, public buildings, and busy streets. You see the clothes she’s selling in action. She gives life to the clothes.

Recloth Collection

Ashley models clothes by taking selfies in the mirror. She does show her room with a clothes rack in the background.

The key though is that her background is still fairly minimal. The room and the rack are tidy, which gives the impression that her clothes are kept neat and clean too.

Ashley edits the photos to achieve the same bright white look across all her listings. She removes any yellow glow to photos, giving the clothes and photo a crisp and clean look.

Takeaways:

  • You can take selfies.

  • It’s okay to have a casual bedroom background. Just be sure it’s tidy and the colors don’t detract from the clothes you’re selling.

My try

After being inspired by the women above, I took the dive myself and modeled some of the clothes in my closet. I stuck to the clothes I felt comfortable in like shirts and sweaters in my size.

The first thing I did is put my phone in a mini tripod on top of a tall stool. Then I used the timer setting to take pictures while a tried a few different poses.

I picked the photos I liked and did a quick edit using either Snapseed or Adobe Lightroom apps to brighten them. Take a look at the results!
